“R-E-S-P-E-C-T – find out what it means to me.” That’s how the old Aretha Franklin song goes! She’s right. We all have very different ideas about what respectful behaviour looks like. It’s the currency of leadership, we’re told, but how hard is it to harvest in workplaces? Respect-building – "just a little bit"Most teams put ‘respect’ amongst their top 10 values and lack of it as one their main bugbears. It’s fleeting yet critical for good relationships, great teamwork and connective conversations. Rumblings about disrespect reverberate repeatedly around workplaces. Codes of conduct implore us to treat others respectfully but the sad part is many of us just don’t see how we’re being disrespectful. Disrespect fuels caustic conversations and toxic emotions that infect most workplaces, killing-off trust, ruining relationships and corroding connectivity. To work better together, we all need to be on the same page about what respectful behaviour is... Bill Cropper’s been helping organisations with teamwork-based design, team-building, and team facilitation since the early 1990’s. He’s trained a legion of teams, team leaders and facilitators in team formation and team-improvement practices. In addition to his scheduled series of public programs, Bill regularly runs tailored team-building and team design workshops under the banner of Working Better Together for work teams wanting to build more positive team culture, harness commitment to shared visions, handle conflict constructively and build more emotionally positive team climates.
