using Emotional Intelligence to enhance your teaching practice
and create connective
classroom climates... Teachers as Emotional Coaches… |
|
||||||
|
“I don’t
teach emotions, I teach science, and I expect students to sit up and pay
attention.” Thankfully, it’s
not the attitude of most of us who teach. Yet
variations on that refrain, which I recall came from a Science HOD at one of
my workshops some years back, gets repeated enough to cause some worry. Whether you plan it or not,
all teachers are emotional coaches. When we’re caught up in curriculum-crush, it’s easy to focus on subjects
and forget people. Like leaders everywhere, teachers knowingly or unknowingly, imprint
emotional patterns and model crucial social lessons in emotional literacy and
self-management. [See Why EI is every
Teacher’s business]. |

Connecting in Classrooms... Nowhere
is Emotional Intelligence more critical than in classrooms. Studies show EI may be ‘the missing link’
in learning and other forms of student achievement. More schools now recognise that developing emotional competencies such as
empathy, resilience, self-control,
perseverance and self-motivation, are critical to preparing today’s
generation to succeed in tomorrow’s future. Emotions
are the backdrop to everything that happens in your school, your classroom and
your students. For them, Social
and Emotional Learning (SEL) leads to higher achievement, focus and
improved social skills. For teachers, they increase "on task" behaviours and reduce discipline events. Teachers need to
be emotionally literate because EI has a profound effect on the way we teach,
the lessons we deliver, the relationships we develop and the results that we
– and the people we teach - ultimately achieve. A
teacher’s level of EI is by far the single most important variable in
creating safe, supportive and constructive learning climates. End your year on a positive
note... Why

because our student population needs a lot of help to stop and think about
feelings and responses to certain situations. It’s not easy and teachers need
direction and support to assist students develop
their EI. The activities were very worthwhile.” Louise

Bill was very welcoming and thoughtful and the tool-kit is an excellent
