“The bottom-line for leaders is that if they do not become conscious of
the cultures in which they are embedded, those cultures will manage them.”
Ed Schein Organisational Culture & Leadership
Culture is key foundation for school renewal.
Many renewal efforts start with a realisation that aspects of
the current school culture need a major overhaul – for example: staff
instead of student focus, toxic classroom climates, dysfunctional
interactions, learning silos or entrenched teacher-directed ways of
thinking...

7 Foundations for School Renewal]
School renewal embodies new ways of thinking
– changes to current mental models, beliefs and tacit
assumptions that govern teaching behaviour, practices and perspectives
that can block renewal. Since culture contributes in a big way to this,
working on it isn’t optional for renewal, it’s essential to sustaining it.
As Thomas Sergiovanni in Principalship says: “The heart and soul
of school culture is what people believe, the assumptions they make about
how school works.”
Shifting the culture is critical to sustain renewal efforts.
But what is culture and how do you go about shifting it?

CULTURE ~

Change & culture are lock-step.
Whether the focus is on whole-school culture change, revitalising
pedagogical practice,
creating more open classrooms or taking a more student-centred
approach to learning, there may be nothing more important in the work of
school leaders than shaping a constructive culture through school renewal.
It’s critical to the quality of student-teacher interaction,
classroom behaviour, learning climate and the experience of being
at-school.
Many leaders fixate on the mechanics of change and ignore
culture. This unique clinic equips you with practical tools to work on the
cultural dimension of change, either as part of a specific culture change
effort or as an adjunct to support other changes your
school
needs to implement. It has lots of tools to help get started on recreating your school
culture – and we explore areas instrumental in doing it.
Topics and tools we cover in this clinic include…
·
What is
culture – components, characteristic and concepts
·
7 Dimensions
