It’s how leaders and teams deal with difficult moments that makes all the difference to morale, climate, cohesion and productivity... In my workshops, I often liken conversations to a dance –
and verbal formulas, I often say, are like learning particular dance moves –
or, if you’re not into dancing, think of particular plays you practise over
and over again in sport. Some of the special formulas we practise in this
clinic are designed to help you over the hurdles that loom up during any
tricky performance conversation. For example, you’ll learn starting formulas
for raising performance issues cleanly and clear in the first place; formulas
for putting things positively when describing the performance you want;
formulas for de-blaming your conversation, handling passivity, hostility and
resistance and taking a more positive and appreciative coaching approach. There’s
loads of different verbals formulas in the self-coaching guide you
get with coming along to the clinic. You may not want many of them. But a few
may appeal as you come up against different kinds of difficult situations in
your performance conversations where you don’t want to trip over your own
tongue and make reforming a difficult performer even more of a distant
prospect. |
