The Change Forum often works with teams in tension. In every team, there’s friction. Few teams can work together without having personalities that bump up against each occasionally. Sometimes it’s over workroles, a lack of cooperation, sharing the work equally – sometimes, it’s more personal issues of attitudes, behaviour or factions. We call these ‘fault-lines’.

Team conflict isn’t always bad. Some teams never disagree – they let things simmer under the surface, but don’t say so. There’s got to be  a will to clear the air and sort out issues. Admitting that we have differences that need resolving is the first step in coping with conflict constructively. But in destructive teams, people keep up feuds and don’t seem to care how it affects the work, their customers, or other team-mates.

The first thing do to tackle tough team talks, is understand what goes on in them. Sometimes, we fumble them by raising issues at the wrong time,  saying things in the wrong way or getting hijacked by strong emotions.

Things like these trip us up. They make difficult team moments even more difficult. Often, a few adjustments in how we say things can make all the difference. And that’s where Tackling Tough Talks can help...
