Dealing with difficult discussions is rarely in anyone’s job description yet challenging and contentious conversations inevitably do arise and they are something most of us need to learn how to do better. They cause much conflict and workplace stress.  Poorly handled or avoided, they detract from performance and erode work relationships. Trust deteriorates, misunderstandings multiply, productivity plummets and teams turn toxic.

“Dealing with Difficult Discussions” helps you unpack what’s really going on when talk becomes tense and feelings get fractious and try out ways you can prepare yourself for taking the heat out of hard talks.

Over 2 days  we’ll take you on a memorable journey through our unique 7-stage model and show you a number of robust, easy-to-use tools that will help you navigate your way through troublesome topics more confidently and practise a methodical, step-by-step approach to resolve differences constructively.

“This clinic was a valuable experience that teaches useable and productive skills for the education sector. Bill contextualised the information into the audience’s real-world situation, which was a very powerful learning tool, was very clear in his explanations and made the session quite inclusive.  I believe all staff in the education sector would benefit from this workshop.” Greg Priebe, HOD

In a safe environment aimed at building your confidence as well as your conversation toolkit you’ll learn how to:

·         Decipher the dynamics of difficult discussions

·         Work out what’s going wrong in your difficult discussions

·         Identify common mistakes we make &  how to avoid them

·         Rehearse our unique 7-stage model for difficult discussions

·         Raise tough topics without raising so much defensiveness

·         Reduce tension & take the heat out of difficult moments

·         Face up to feelings – core of difficult discussions

·         Use formulas to beat discussion blockers like blame

·         Deal more confidently with difficult conversations

·         Start and finish well to resolve issues and repair relationships

“Educational, beneficial and enjoyable. This clinic is well-structured and well-paced. It offers opportunities for reflection on your own practice, with new information about handling difficult discussions presented visually, clearly and with practical discussion with colleagues with a good variety of instructional methods and a great guidebook. Bill, you are very skilled at seizing the ‘teachable moment’” Jenny Hubble, Principal

Course Features:  Take-away a 100-page 2nd edition of our self-coaching guide with 20 tools and lots of tips. Practise our simple 7-stage model for dealing with difficult discussions and work on re-scripting your own cases. Do our Difficult Discussions Scorecard based on our 7-stage model to set goals and develop a conversational improvement plan.  [Download Brochure for outline and registration]

Is this right for you? Difficult discussions come in all shapes and sizes. This clinic benefits anyone who wants to increase their conversational mastery and learn specific tools and techniques for handling different kinds of difficult discussions more confidently and constructively – managers, team leaders, committee members, project leaders, customer relations officers, community groups, teachers, facilitators, trainers...

“Extremely informative. I wanted to be able to construct and hold difficult discussions without offending or putting people offside and this clinic provided me with a high level of self-awareness in relation to my own behaviours I can apply to both professional and private life. Scenarios you gave helped to put a lot into context and the methods you use are great. Thanks again, the workshop was really helpful!” Nicole Spencer, Community Housing organisation
